Up here in Maine, we count the seasons a little differently. They say that eskimos have many words for snow. Well, we're outdoors a lot and it's important to be ready for what you'll experience. So, we don't have just four piddly seasons:
- Mud Season (starts mid-March): Winter's over, the frost melts, and so we have mush. Many roads are closed to trucks.
- Black Fly Season (starts May): These tiny little guys help us keep tourist populations low during those otherwise appealing spring months.
- Road Construction Season (starts mid-Jun): Since no one who owns a truck paid attention during Mud Season, we fix all the roads. Tourists call this part of the year "summer".
- Snake Season: Yes, this is a thing. We have nine types of snakes up here in Maine and this is when they hatch.
- The Weekend The Leaves Change (two days, maybe early October but who knows?): We have a beautiful changing of the leaves. Then they all fall off the trees while you're sleeping.
- Snow Season: This starts on the heal of the leaves changing, when it's time to stoke up the woodstove. Tourists call this part of the year "winter". Since one can only take so much "winter", we here at 25 Acres have declared that "Snow Season" ends on Dec 31st.
- Yes It's Still Snow Season (starts Jan 1): Of course, there's more snow to be had. On Jan 1, we're not halfway through the woodburning for the year. So, we have a bonus Snow Season added on to take us around the clock to the next Mud Season.
